Grand Valley State University has partnered with a local distiller to make a GVSU branded canned cocktail.

ALLENDALE, Mich. — In 2023, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill into law legalizing the sale of alcohol at college athletic events in the state.

Since that bill was signed, colleges across Michigan have applied for liquor licenses and have even began sales. Grand Valley State University (GVSU) has even partnered with a local distiller to make a GVSU branded canned cocktail.

Lake + Valley Lemonade, distilled by Long Road Distillers, is the latest installment of the GVSU Lake + Valley lifestyle line. Long Road Distillers is owned by GVSU alumni and opened in May of 2015.

“As Laker Alumni, Kyle and I are thrilled beyond belief to have an opportunity to partner with GVSU in the creation of Lake + Valley Lemonade,” said Long Road Owner and Co-Founder Jon O’Conner. “The amazing educational opportunities and experiences GVSU provided to us both were instrumental in giving us the confidence to start our own distillery. To now be able to partner with the university in the creation of a world class Ready to Drink canned cocktail they can call their own is something we are so unbelievably proud of!”

Starting Monday, June 24 the canned cocktail will be available for purchase throughout the state of Michigan as they plan to sell it in stores, bars and restaurants.

In fall, when the football season kicks off, Laker fans will be able to purchase and enjoy Lake + Valley Lemonade at Lubbers Stadium and the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The 12 oz cans will feature the “GV” athletics trademark and color. The cocktail itself will have flavors of lemon and blueberry with a hint of basil.

“It felt blue, Grand Valley Laker Blue. It felt right going with the blueberry lemonade. It would be a light, refreshing, crisp drink that would be great for the Michigan summers,” said Joshua Borger, Director of Marketing and Fan Development.

The cocktail features Long Road distillers original vodka and contains five percent alcohol with 110 calories. The director of marketing at GVSU said students and the community are excited about the new drink.

“Students seem pretty excited. I’ve seen a few comments that say they can’t wait to try this at football games. It’s really awesome that people can’t wait to get back to Grand Rapids so that they can try it,” said Borger.

“We are humbled to partner with a GVSU Alumni owned business that is anchored in our West Michigan community. Jon and Kyle’s commitment to quality, service, and excellence aligns with GVSU Athletics value of championship excellence. This new partnership with Lake + Valley Lemonade has truly combined two hard working championship brands to create a product that will be enjoyed by Long Road fans and Laker Nation alike,” said Deputy Director of GVSU Athletics, Doug Lipinski.

“With distribution across the state, we are excited to extend the GVSU brand to new areas. No matter if it is a hot Michigan summer day at the lake or a beautiful fall night tailgating at Lubbers Stadium, Lake + Valley Lemonade is perfect. We look forward to the growth of this partnership.” Lipinski added.

Long Road Distillers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) — This week on the Beer Beat, we’re learning about hard alcohol at Long Road Distillery.

In the video above, Pat Evans of the Grand Rapids Business Journal and Grand Rapids Magazine takes us to the distillery to explain why that sector is becoming more popular.

Long Road Distillers

The Grand Rapids Public Museum announced a collaboration on Thursday with a local distillery for a new exhibit that explores Prohibition.

“American Spirits: the Rise and Fall of Prohibition” opens on September 26.

Long Road Distillers, on the city’s west side, has created a “bathtub gin” kit to commemorate the exhibit. It includes everything you need to infuse your own gin at home, and comes with a special prohibition-labeled bottle.

You can pick up the kit at Long Road Distillers. Doors there opened June; it’s the first craft distillery in the history of the City of Grand Rapids.

Long Road Distillers

You can soon add craft spirits to Grand Rapids’ craft brewing reputation. The Grand Rapids City planning commission unanimously approved West Michigan’s second craft distillery on Thursday.

Long Road Distillers leased space on West Leonard Street and now they have the go-ahead to establish a micro-distillery, tasting room, and special event space.

Long Road Distillers will open this fall at 537 Leonard Street NW, across Quarry Avenue from Mitten Brewing Co.

In co-ownerKyle Van Strien’s eyes, Mitten Brewing Company is a Westside success story.

“They were an example of, they’ve done a great job, they’ve made it work,” he said.

Now he stands across the street from the Mitten, fresh of the city’s unanimous decision to move forward with his plans, inspired to turn an old brick building into a booming distillery. He and co-owner Jon O’Connor are long-time, active Westside residents.

“We’ve just been really passionate about the Westside, we love the Westside,” said O’Connor.

The city gave them the unanimous go-ahead to renovate the 8-thousand-square-foot space. The clothing company will move out, making way for a tasting room and special events space.

“We’re the first grain-to-glass distillery in the city,” he said.

“There will be barrel storage here, fermenters laying the wall, and our still will sit up in the tasting room and be glassed off so people can see it when they walk in,” he said.

Van Strien is excited for what customers will taste at the new Long Road Distillers.

“A really high-quality vodka, a gin, a clear whisky, and then a malted gin,” he said.

It’s all coming from Michigan farmlands. Flavored spirits will come later, along with distribution.

But the immediate concern now is parking. Some neighbors and businesses say there isn’t enough already and they went before the city with their concerns. Jamie Taylor represented her business, Grand Rapids Hydroponics, which is directly across the street from the Mitten.

“Their customers park in front of our store and they’ll be there eating lunch and stuff and it limits us because we have to carry those out and load their cars. And if they’re parks blocks away it can be a big issue,” she said.

Van Strien says they’re working to accommodate.

“Our deliveries, coming through our parking lot in the morning, by re-surfacing our parking lot and re-orienting it so there’s more parking spots.

He and O’Conner will add 11 spots behind the distillery and the church parking lot across the street will lease 25 spots. It already leases to the Mitten. They expect a crowd; it remains to be seen how congested the area will get.

“There’s a bus stop right there,” he said. “People can take the bus to get here and to go home.”

The owners say music will be an acoustic; nothing too loud. There’s a few restrictions. The bar area must close by midnight Sunday through Thursday.
